چکیده

The prevalence of blinding diseases such as agerelated macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy have significantly increased in the United States over the last decade.1 In response to the higher incidence of retinal degenerative diseases, the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recently proposed the audacious goal of regenerating neurons and neural connections in the eye and visual system.2 To date, regenerative medicine has to a large extent focused on determining how to reprogram stem cells into retinal neurons that can be used to restore vision. Recent surprising findings, however, suggest that mammals may possess limited in vivo regenerative potential. The challenge now lies in understanding why the retina in other vertebrates regenerates, while mammals lack this ability. In this review, we summarize current knowledge on endogenous mechanisms of regeneration in frogs and how these findings might provide essential information to stimulate regeneration in the human retina.

Proteins and small molecules for cellular regenerative medicine.

Regenerative medicine seeks to understand tissue development and homeostasis and build on that knowledge to enhance regeneration of injured tissues. By replenishing lost functional tissues and cells, regenerative medicine could change the treatment paradigm for a broad range of degenerative and ischemic diseases. Multipotent cells hold promise as potential building blocks for regenerating lost ...

Regenerative biology and medicine.

The replacement of damaged tissues and organs with tissue and organ transplants or bionic implants has serious drawbacks. There is now emerging a new approach to tissue and organ replacement, regenerative biology and medicine. Regenerative biology seeks to understand the cellular and molecular differences between regenerating and non-regenerating tissues. Regenerative medicine seeks to apply th...

Pregenerative medicine: developmental paradigms in the biology of cardiovascular regeneration.

The ability to create new functional cardiomyocytes is the holy grail of cardiac regenerative medicine. From studies using model organisms, new insights into the fundamental pathways that drive heart muscle regeneration have begun to arise as well as a growing knowledge of the distinct families of multipotent cardiovascular progenitors that generate diverse lineages during heart development. In...
